I am having problems with my touchpad in Chrome. Whenever I two finger scroll for a short time (~< 1 second, I think, its hard to time) I then get shown the right click menu. If I keep my fingers on the touchpad for longer, even if I don't scroll, then no right click occurs.

As you can imagine this is high frustrating as 1s is surprisingly long in terms of scroll time and finding myself right clicking every scroll is incredibly annoying.

System details:

I had the same issue only in Chrome too.
You can solve this problem by using 50-synaptics.conf config file :

wget http://hgdev.co/wp-content/uploads/50-synaptics.conf
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
sudo cp 50-synaptics.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

You can also manually edit this config file to better fits your preferences. The Arch Wiki page on Synatics trackpad will be helpful for this.

Blacklisting the psmouse improves the situation but xchat gnome is still having issues.

I followed instructions on https://github.com/mpalourdio/xps13

Check that your BIOS is version A03 or later, and touchpad firmware is up to date Touchpad firmware A00.

blacklist psmouse driver so that the trackpad uses i2c instead. Make sure there is no PS/2 in the output of xinput -list.

I noticed that xchat-gnome seems to be ignoring the touch-to-click setting and some other applications too (like VLC, but only the preference window).

In Xorg.log I see this error when the touchpad goes nuts:

(EE) [dix] DLL0665:01 06CB:76AD UNKNOWN: unable to find touch point 0

The only way I have to solve temporarily the issue is to disable the trackpad completely from the Settings panel and enable it again. Make sure you have an external mouse attached.

I was able to achieve this by using the gnome-tweak-tool and enabling the area Mouse click emulation under the Keyboard & Mouse section.

Then I added a new file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d and named it 90-libinput-quirks.conf with the following content

        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "libinput"
        Option "Tapping" "True"

The file name itself is somewhat important, it needs to start with a higher number than the libinput.conf file bundled with Ubuntu 18.04. Mine was named 40-libinput.conf so I named mine 90-libinput-quirks.conf to make sure it was loaded after, and thus overriding, the original config.

Alternatively you could just add the Option "Tapping" "True" to the section identifier Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall" just as above. Not sure if this file could be overwritten by something like an update, so I prefer the first approach.
