Ubuntu – Can’t see the subtitles in totem

I have successfully managed to load subtitles in totem and it says that the subtitles are run but,the problem is that I can't see them.
Does anybody know a fix for it?

Okay When a DVD is ripped via Windows it does not save the subtitles in a separate file it simply lays the text in an overlay on the .VOB file.

I installed gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-plugins-bad plus the dependencies again using the --reinstall command.

After re-ripping the DVD and creating a .sub file from the subtitle file on the DVD I have managed to load the subtitles in Totem without a problem.

It seems that Totem, even with the restricted plug ins and additions from the MediBuntu PPA can not read the subtitles from ripped DVD's although it can from traditional DVDs i.e. on a disc.

You can however, if you already have ripped DVDs or videos with subtitles simply create a .sub file in a text editor and save it in the Root of the DVD folder. Once saved you can open the file you have created by selected "Select text subtitles" This will load the file and display the subtitles as an overlay on the screen.

As with AVI files CYREX had it 100% as long as the .avi and the .srt file are named the same and in the same folder you can open the file and activate subtitles from the right click menu.

It looks like it stays in memory to me. A similar plugin that just downloads the subtitles file from opensubtitles is probably going to be your answer by using some of that code and modifying around line:

The one line edit below is BAD, but gets it not broken for unix-like OS-es only. For the script to be cross platform it needs OS detection logic:

If someone running Windows VLC is interested in testing a patch that gets saving working on both Linux and Windows, check this pull request.

Evidently someone has tacked on some enhancements including the patch here.

This version here works in Linux (as well as in Windows) to save subtitles.

Ubuntu – How to turn off subtitles in Totem

Setting them to size 1 is not a great solution, but setting them to size zero works!

You have to do it via gsettings though, the GUI will not allow size zero. Use the following command:

gsettings set org.gnome.totem subtitle-font '[whatever your font is here], 0'

You can turn them off for the current video in the menu, but every time you start a new video they come back. As far as I can tell, this is the only way to set no subtitles as a default.
