Ubuntu – Why can’t I create a partition table on the USB flash drive using GParted

I have a blank USB flash drive I want to put a new filesystem on. If I try adding a new partition it complains "No partition table found on device /dev/sdc". Creating a msdos partition table seems to work correctly, except that when I go to add a new partition it complains with the same error. What am I missing?

Trying using Disk Utility in the Administration Menu (command line: palimpsest) instead of gparted. You should be able to create a partition table with it or replace the existing one.

It's entirely possible they use the same libraries & access routines - if that fails i'd suspect your hardware is faulty.

Why do you create so many NTFS partitions in the first place? As for your info, Ubuntu/Kubuntu can't be installed on one of those, they require a Linux file system like ext4.

I'd suggest the following:

Delete all partition.
Use Vista to create a primary NTFS partition for Windows8, and then proceed installing it.
Install Ubuntu and Kubuntu. You can create partitions for them inside the installer.

You might try zeroing out the drive as mentioned in the comments by running...

# dd count=1 bs=512 if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx && sync

... where sdx is the drive you're wanting to format.

BE VERY CAREFUL TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE DOING THIS AGAINST THE RIGHT DRIVE!

Then create a new partition table...

# cfdisk /dev/sdx
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdx1
# e2label /dev/sdx1 USB_STICK

This combined with running gparted with...

gksudo gparted

...worked for me. I had a USB stick that I dd'd an iso on to ot use for booting then had trouble recovering it. These were the steps I took and it as usable again.
