Ubuntu – Can’t boot, no grub, “alloc magic is broken”

I cannot boot into GRUB. I see this:

Alloc magic is broken at XXXXXX Press any key

but when I do nothing happens. Holding shift doesn't do anything either.

The last time I could use my machine I changed stuff in /etc/grub.d, but I chrooted into the system, reverted everything and successfully ran update-grub.

What can I try?

If anyone wondering: Ubuntu 12.04.1, Installation media was (I guess) 11.10, it's an i5-first generation kernel, 4GB RAM, memtest was okay.

A Boot-Repair Live USB can be used to repair Grub. You can download the ISO from the Ubuntu Wiki. Then, use Unetbootin to create a Live USB from the ISO file you downloaded. After you boot from the USB, the Boot Repair utility will pop up. Just click on the Recommended Repair button, and Boot-Repair will repair Grub for you.

I recommend you install GRUB into the Master Boot Record of the second hard disk you are installing Ubuntu on and configure your bios to boot that hard drive first, GRUB will detect your Windows install on the SSD and include it allowing you to choose either operating system on start up.

I think you need to reinstall grub loader in order to display both Ubuntu and Windows at startup.

You can do it with boot-repair software, it will install grub on your system, for that boot any Ubuntu on pendrive or removable media and start it as "try Ubuntu" then goto terminal and install boot-repair by following command.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && (sudo boot-repair &)

boot-repair

Then click the "Recommended repair" button. When repair is finished, note the URL (paste.ubuntu.com/XXXXX) that appeared on a paper, then reboot and check if you recovered access to your OSs.
