Ubuntu – Canon LBP2900 printer only works when connected after log in

I have a Canon LBP2900 printer and Ubuntu Natty 64-bit.

After quite some trouble I found here a nice guide explaining a installation procedure with packages from this ppa.

I followed the guide and did all steps and now the printer works if it is connected (or powered on) after login.

If I connect it already before my computer is started, the following happens. A second printer (LBP2900-2) is automatically created and the command sudo /etc/init.d/ccpd status only gives one pid, while it should give two.

How can I fix this?

An extra detail that can help; normally the device uri is ccp:/var/ccpd/fifo0. Actually this path (/var/ccpd/fifo0) does not exist, but that does not seem to matter. The printer that Ubuntu automatically adds when starting up with the printer connected has usb://Canon/LBP2900 as uri

It sounds like udev is somehow confused. I suggest double-checking your steps on that page under the heading Starting/Stopping on USB Add/Remove. Assuming that is all correct, add the output of the following command to your question:

grep lp /etc/udev/rules.d/*

The fact that your printer is not working has nothing to do with the statusui. The Status UI is not necessary for printing, and works eventhough it gives this Gtk-WARNINGs.

The problem you have is that pstocapt doesn't work. Now you have not given much information about your system, but in my experience this happens on 64-bit machines.

In the case of 64-bit machines, the common installation procedure does something wrong. It makes symlinks in /usr/lib/cups/filter to files in /usr/lib64/cups/filter. This does not work. Therefore, you should do the following:

rm /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocapt /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocapt2 /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocapt3 /usr/lib/cups/backend/ccp
cp /usr/lib64/filter/pstocapt* /usr/lib/cups/filter/
cp /usr/lib64/backend/ccp /usr/lib/cups/backend/

Off course, do this only if that files really exist in the lib64 folder.

Remove the printer from the window System - Printers.

Uninstall cndrvcups-capt and cndrvcups-common with Ubuntu Sofware Center.

Go to this page:

The printer is not working.

The wrong way signal on the top of the screen tells us that something was wrong with the dependencies and that we have to type on the terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f cndrvcups-common

and

sudo apt-get install -f cndrvcups-capt

Dependencies are all right, but the printer is still silent.

Open the printer window and look at the properties: the URI is

ccp://localhost:59687.

Correct it in

ccp://localhost:59787.

The printer is still silent.

Type on the terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/ccpd status

The answer is one number, not two: too bad.

Type on the terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/ccpd restart

and then

sudo /etc/init.d/ccpd status

The answer is two numbers. OK.

Try printing the test page, no paper on the printer, the printer stops and does not restart.

We have to start the printer monitor at bootstrap.

On the system setting - startup applications

click the Add button

Name: Canon printing status monitor

Command: captstatusui -e -P LBP2900

Description: Hidden until an error occurs

The printer now is working properly.
