Ubuntu – Can master pdf editor or some other software allow me edit pdf bookmarks arbitrarily

I try to edit bookmarks of a pdf file under master pdf editor. Maybe
I miss something, but I can't create a new bookmark at the same
level or at a higher level than some existing bookmarks. (e.g.
create a bookmark for chapter, to group the existing section
bookmarks under it). All I can is to create a new bookmark under an
existing bookmark. DO I miss something?

I could but now can't invoke my pdfexchange by

$ wine pdfexchange 1.pdf
fixme:service:scmdatabase_autostart_services Auto-start service L"ABBYY.Licensing.FineReader.Professional.10.0" failed to start: 2
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\pdfexchange.exe"

Not sure why.

Are there other applications on Ubuntu that can allow me to arbitrarily edit pdf bookmarks?

There are two very good alternatives to Master PDF editor as far as PDF bookmarks are concerned, jPdf Tweak and JPdfBookmarks. Both are open-source and require Java. I suggest you give them a try and see which one suits your needs.

Xournal will allow you to draw/write anything on the top layer of any PDF document and then export it back to PDF. It doesn't allow to actually fill PDF forms, but if writing text / drawing on top of your PDF is enough for you, you may find it useful.

To install from terminal, use the following command:

sudo apt-get install xournal

If Master PDF Editor (MPE) is not listed all you need is to create a MasterPdfEditor.desktop file. Just press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command(s) below:

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/MasterPdfEditor.desktop

Copy and paste the following, and then save and close the file. (Note that the *.desktop files should be in /usr/share/applications).

Comment=PDF and XPS files editor
Exec=/opt/master-pdf-editor/master-pdf-editor %f
Path=/opt/master-pdf-editor

Then

Right click on the PDF file --> Open With --> Open With Other Application

If you don't see Master PDF Editor in the list, click on Show Other Applications

Scroll down to Master PDF Editor, highlight it, and click on Use as Default.
