Ubuntu – Can i install AMD Catalyst 11.9

i got a problem i can't figure out how to fix.

I got 11.10 Oneiric (AMD 64) on a Lenovo s205 with AMD E-450, ATI HD 6320 Graphics and AMD Catalyst 11.8 driver.
The perfomance is not terrible but worse than the standard driver Ubuntu boots with before the proprietary ATI driver are installed. When dragging windows over the desktop they don't move smooth and wacthing videos in Totem Movie Player i get black frames every 3-4 seconds.
Also i got a "AMD Unsupported hardware" water mark in my lower right corner of my desktop the hole time. In Ubuntu "System Info" in Ubuntu system setting it repports graphics driver to be "VESA: Wrestler"
I tried the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)" but it can't install.
The 11.9 driver from AMD installes but does not work with Unity, the launcher are missing.
If I remove the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver, Unity launcher are again missing when restarting.

Will installing this driver work with Unity and make playback smooth like Win 7?

AMD support for the e-450 is not ready yet! They should hopefully be releasing some compatible drivers in the near future.

I suggest two things

1 In a terminal type the following

fglrxinfo

This will tell you if fglrx is installed and working well you should see an output similar to:

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series       
OpenGL version string: 3.3.11399 Compatibility Profile Context

If not it has not installed properly and I would follow the advice on the Ubuntu ATI page here Ubuntu ATI site

I usually always install the ATI drivers in the terminal with the following command

sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdccclete

You may also need to reinstall the updates again:

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates

It can be a pain I know from experience. Sometimes I have had to go back the beginning by cleaning out fglrx (sudo apt-get purge fglrx*) and starting afresh.

Ubuntu – How to get AMD graphics card working well 12.04

I had EXACTLY similar problems. Here's what i did : I purged FGLRX install by using these commands :

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*

(if the first one does not work, it's normal, just use the second one)

Then i rebooted, went on AMD's driver download section, downloaded the drivers i needed, ran the .run drivers into a terminal and installed them. Rebooted, went into Catalyst Control Center>Display Settings>Tear free and checked activate tear free.

Then i went on compiz settings via CompizConfig (you may need to install it via Ubuntu's Software Center) clicked on OPENGL and unchecked Sync to VBlank and everything went fine.
