Ubuntu – bumblebee::Cannot access secondary GPU – error: Could not load GPU driver

As of today, this was fixed by the latest nvidia-current update 🙂

Until last week i had a working bumblee/nvidia set up.

Now, when i do

optirun -vv firefox

I'm greeted by:

I've seen some comments to the effect of deleting

10-nvidia-current-thinkpad-t420s.conf

but doing

ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

yields:

10-evdev.conf         11-evdev-trackpoint.conf  50-vmmouse.conf  51-synaptics-quirks.conf
11-evdev-quirks.conf  50-synaptics.conf         50-wacom.conf

Is there a way to fix this?

same problem. Renaming the drivers name solved the problem but

I can't access external monitors (I could just before last update). I don't see them from the "displays" system setting

Running optirun -vv nvidia-settings rise the error that I'm not currently using nvidia X drivers and that I shoud run nvidia-xconfig. the -vv doesn't show any error, full log is reported below

So to get Bumblebee to work

a) Run the following command to find out the BusID for your Nvidia graphics card:

 lspci | grep NVIDIA

The BusID is the number in the beginning of the line returned by the command above. Here's how the output for the command above looks like on my laptop:

 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [GeForce GT 525M] (rev ff)

The BusID is the number in bold, "01:00.0" in my case.

b) Now we'll have to add the BusID to /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia and for this, we'll open the file as root with a text editor (I'll use Gedit in the command below):

 sudo gedit /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia

And in this file, in the "Device" section, add the following:

    BusID "PCI:YOUR_BUS_ID"

Replacing "YOUR_BUS_ID" with the BusID returned by the command used under step a). For me (remember, for you, the BusID may be different), this line looks like this:

  BusID "PCI:01:00:0"

Then, restart your system and Bumblebee should work so when you want to run an application or game on your Nvidia card, use:

 optirun APP_OR_GAME
 optirun glxspheres

Nvidia – Failing to Initialize Nvidia GPU with Bumblebee

The issue lay with the fact that in both the 12.04 and 13.04 Ubuntu repros nvidia-current is nvidia-304, and this has no support for my Geforce 740M card which is relatively new. Infact the beta driver nvidia-319.12 which supported my chipset only came out in early April, while a more stable driver nvidia-319.17 was only released just over a week ago.

In order to fix my problem in Ubuntu 13.04, I performed the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-319

I then installed bumblebee by the method described by the wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

To test, I installed mesa-utils, and ran optirun glxgears with great success!

The only thing I would like to check now is whether the bumblebee version offered as default by the repro is the latest 3.2.1 released on the 26th of April. Either way it is not a hassle to upgrade.
