Ubuntu – Brightness and volume buttons don’t work

I have a Toshiba Chromebook 2. I installed Ubuntu 14.04.02 few days ago and noticed that my function buttons don't work. I mostly care about the brightness and volume buttons. Is there any solution for this?

Go to the KDE settings ("configure desktop" or "system settings") -> Shortcuts and Gestures -> Global Keyboard Shorcuts.

For volume, go to KMix, click "Volume Down" next to "Decrease Volume", click the box next to "Custom", then hit "Volume Down" button on your chromebook. Do the same with "Mute" and "Volume Up".

For brightness, go to "KDE Daemon". Set "Decrease Screen Brightness" and "Increase Screen Brightness" in the same way.

If the buttons are not detected at all, then it is likely that X11 does not support the buttons.

Open terminal (Clt + Alt + T) and run the command given below:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Now the new window opens and you will see the lines given below:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quite_splice"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

Now you have to change the lines above by the command lines given below:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force acpi_backlight=vendor"

Then save the window and Update the grub from the terminal using:

sudo update-grub

Now you can increase or decrease the brightness in PC with Latest Ubuntu in it.

Ubuntu – Cannot adjust brightness after sleep

I found a better solution than the one selected above.

Press Alt + F2 and type gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub.
Find the line than starts with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= and modify it as follows: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor".
In a terminal (ctrl + alt + T) type sudo update-grub.
Reboot.

This solution no longer works on 13.10 and 14.04.

A solution that does is creating an xorg configuration file:

In a terminal type sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf to create the file.
Followed by sudo gedit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf to edit its content.
Then add the following content and save:

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "card0"
        Driver      "intel"
        Option      "Backlight"  "intel_backlight"
        BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"

EndSection

Log out and in again.
