Ubuntu – Bluetooth mouse keeps disconnecting

I am running 17.04 with 4.10.0-38-generic kernel.

My MX Master 2S connected with USBBT2EDR4 (StarTech) keeps coming and going with connectivity, here's a sample of dmesg showing the cycle of a few disconnections and reconnections:

Installing bluez-hid2hci fixed this issue for me.

I came across this thread in searching for a similar issue on a Thinkpad Yoga 11e with any bluetooth mice I tried using stock Gnome. Mouse would work, freeze for a few seconds, and usually start working again (sometimes they would just die until a reboot). Installed a bunch of different bt-managers and still got the errors below in journalctl:

Turning the mouse off stopped the messages, so pretty sure it was the culprit of the repeated messages.

Find ID of your device:

$ lsusb | grep Bluetooth

My output for example:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21d7 Broadcom Corp. BCM43142 Bluetooth 4.0

from which 0a5c:21d7 should be remembered.

Get a hex file for your device:

How to get the right hex file.

So I have the id of the chip: 0a5c:21d7 and a bunch of the hex files from the downloaded archive. How can I get the right one for me? The trick is to investigate the .inf file that instructs windows what to install. Searching for 21D7 (note the capital D instead of 'd') I get this:

The USB/VID&PID is what I get on lsusb: capital(0a5c:21d7). The RAMUSB21D7 is what I need to search next in the inf file (it is the device's description).

It will tell the name and file its looking for. I your case it is:brcm/BCM43142A0-0a5c-21d7.hcd

Convert the correct hex to hcd file. Open terminal and type these commands:

sudo apt-get install git

git clone git://github.com/jessesung/hex2hcd.git

cd hex2hcd

make

./hex2hcd ../BCMxxxx.xxx.xxx.xx.hex BCM43142A0-0a5c-21d7.hcd (Correct hex file and required hcd name here)

sudo cp BCM43142A0-0a5c-21d7.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm

Ok I had the exact same problem. If you look at the error messages, it seems like there is no file called brcmfmac43602-pcie.txt. All you need to do is create that file manually by running the following command:

sudo touch brcmfmac43602-pcie.txt

in the directory /lib/firmware/brcm/ and the edit it by writing random letters (it doesn't matter what you write). This fools the software and bluetooth works perfectly after doing this. More on this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1693521
