Ubuntu – Automatically mark emails as read in Evolution 3.2.2

While I did it for different reasons, it may help to upgrade to Evolution 3.4. Ubuntu intentionally remained on an older version of Evolution (and some other Gnome applications) for 12.04, due to insufficient testing. That said, I haven't had any of the issues you're describing.

Thanks to a helpful fellow AU member, I found the Stracciatella PPA, which has all the Gnome 3.4 stuff. Installing Evolution itself was pretty painless, though Ubuntu really doesn't want you to, so you have to tell it to do so explicitly.

1. Add the repo: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:janvitus/gnomestracciatella
2. Update apt (sudo apt-get update)
3. Install Evolution (sudo apt-get install evolution)
4. Remove or disable the PPA, so Ubuntu doesn't continue to complain that it can't update everything.

The Evolution data structure has changed quite a lot -- the directory .evolution is no longer used. If you made a backup from within Evolution before upgrading, you should be able to restore it (hopefully). Otherwise it will be a bit troublesome:

E-Mail accounts are faster to re-configure (if you used IMAP, data is still on the server. People using POP3 will not have this option to regain their mails).

Other options can be found in several questions on this site, e.g.:

• Evolution data migration (on update) missed all but the first “accounts” (mail, addressbook, calendar…)
• Questions containing '[evolution] migration'

Basically, Evolution currently stores its configuration in 3 different folders:

• .local/share/evolution
• .local/config/evolution
• .gconf/apps/evolution

But not only the location has changed, formats are also different (e.g. address books now use SQLite databases).
