Ubuntu – Audio cd ripping 18.04

I put an audio cd in the drive on my new 18.04 installation, started Rhythmbox, selected all and clicked "Extract". It extracted the first track and stopped. Whenever I try to rip more tracks, I get the message "Could not open resource for writing."

I tried to change the format to MP3, but then I'm told to install additional software, but not which software.

I tried to install Sound Juicer, and I should just have ripped my cd in Ogg Vorbis format, but I had to try and change the format to MP3, and now whenever I start Sound Juicer, I get a "Cancel or switch profile" dialog, but whatever I choose, Sound Juicer closes. I tried to uninstall it and install it again, but now that dialog comes up regardsless, and the program closes whatever I choose.

fre:ac works on my Ubuntu 18.04 system. I did not succeed with rythmbox, Amarok, asunder, audacious and sound juicer for getting mp3 files from my audio CD.

Starting around Ubuntu 12.04, when you rip CDs in Ubuntu using Rhythmbox or Sound Juicer the default settings will create VBR MP3s, but the VBR headers don't get added, so just about any program you open the MP3s with will show the incorrect track length, including the default music player (Rhythmbox) and the default file manager (Nautilus).

The easiest solution is to add the VBR header to the MP3s after ripping them:

Install vbrfix by running this command in a terminal:
```
sudo apt-get install vbrfix
```
Now CD to the folder where the mp3s are that you need to fix:
```
cd /path/to/mp3s
```

Run this command to add the VBR headers to the mp3s:

find . -type f -iname '*.mp3' -exec vbrfix {} {} \;

Vbrfix seems to leave behind a couple of temporary files, so clean them up:
```
rm vbrfix.log vbrfix.tmp
```

An alternative solution is to change the default preset so that the CDs are ripped as CBR instead of VBR MP3s. There's a pretty good explanation here: https://askubuntu.com/a/154933/18665

A profile like this ought to do the trick (change the bit rate as desired):
