Ubuntu – Application does not open in the same workspace when switched during loading

If the workspace is switched while a program loads, its window will open in the newly-active workspace. Is there any way to change this?

I'd much prefer that the program open in the workspace it was originally launched from.

That's not configurable, but it may be a bug. I would report it if I were you. Launchpad.net is the place to do so.

You could try this, if you haven't installed compiz settings manager, then do so by running:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Once it's installed, click System > Preferences > Compiz Settings Manager

Then go to Focus & Raise Behaviour > General and set Focus Prevention Level to Off

Tested on Ubuntu 16.04.

This shouldn't happen if you move to the other workspace from the workspace switcher (top right usually). Make sure your window is not defined to appear always on the visible workspace (main window menu in upper left corner of the window title bar). (the right setting for what you want is "Appears only in this workspace").

See also if the window isn't fixed (appears on all workspaces). This is applied when you click on the small left icon (pin or cirle usually) on the window title bar next to the "main window menu" (with maximize ... close) in the corner. This button is not always there as it depends on themes and config.
