I have to reset my internet connection often to get it to work. When it does work, it's definitely slower than when I'm on my Windows installation. My computer uses an RTL8188CE wireless card from Realtek. I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.10. Power management is not on. I've read on other sites that some people fixed the issue pertaining to this wireless card by downloading and installing the drivers from the Realtek site, but it seems as if that only helped people with 32-bit installations. Anyone have any luck with this specific wireless card?

Putting this into /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8192.conf

options rtl8192ce ips=0 fwlps=0 debug=2

then restart, fixed it for me.

Realtek is making the official Linux driver available unofficially (via Dropbox)

Support for the RTL8273AE-BT has been added by Realtek in the 92-series driver, version 0006.0514.2012. For unknown reasons, neither the Windows nor Linux drivers are available on their website (yet). But Realtek tech support has been providing a Dropbox link with the source code/firmware tarball which numerous users have reported as working.

Where do I get it? Is it safe?

How do I build and install the driver on Ubuntu?

Open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T.

You'll need to install these packages first to build the driver:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic linux-headers-`uname -r`

Paste the below line to download and extract the driver archive in one single step:

wget -O- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57056576/DRIVERS/REALTEK/rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514.2012.tar.gz | tar -xz

Change to the extracted driver's directory, build and install the driver:

cd rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514.2012
make
sudo make install

Test the driver by loading it (this is a one-time step; after you reboot once, the driver should automatically load on every boot):

I later discovered this bug report. Following the suggestions there, I enabled the network card in the BIOS then was able to toggle the hardware switch while the hp_wmi module was disabled. This allowed me to connect to my wireless router, but attempting to use the connection causes a kernel panic as with the bug reported linked here.

Pending the resolution of that bug, I'm using the suggested workaround. Specifically:
