I want to do a two-column layout in Microsoft Word, but instead of the second column being written as a continuation of the first, I want the two columns to be written separately just like they were two different pages.
How would you go about doing this in Word 2010?
When you set the layout to be centered vertically on the page, it affects the entire page. I cannot find a way to do what you want - having two columns with different vertical heights. Insert a line between the two columns and I think you'll begin to see what is going on. The shorter column will determine the height of the container used for the entire content on the page.
To do what you want, insert a table with one row and two columns. You can expand the table to fill the entire page, and then center the text vertically in the table cells. Remove the borders and it looks exactly like your two columns.
I think you can just drag the table to where you want it once you've created it. Or more formally try setting the table's position relative to the margin or page, rather than to the column. You will need to play with the wrapping too (probably set it to Around).

Another easy way to do what you describe is to use a table. Turn the borders off and you'll get two columns that are independent of each other.
