Word numbering list changes to Heading 1 style

I'm not sure if you can find similar settings in Word 2003, but in Word 2007 you can make multilevel numbered lists (and assign them to headers later).

First, click the multilevel list button under the Home tab, and go to Define New Multilevel List.

1. Select '1' under Click level to modify.

2. Pick the roman number style under Number style for this level.

3. Make sure Start at is set to I.

   

4. Select 2 under Click level to modify.

5. Pick the decimal style under Number style for this level.

6. Set Start at to 1.

7. Check Start list after, and set its value to Level 1.

   

Result:

For 2007 it’s:

1. Office button → “Word Options” → “Proofing” → “AutoCorrect Options” → “AutoFormat As You Type”
2. Check the “Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces” box.

For 2010 it’s essentially the same:

1. “File” menu → “Options” → “Proofing” → “AutoCorrect Options …” button → “AutoFormat As You Type” tab → “Automatically as you type” section
   • If you can’t find the “Proofing” panel as described above, try “File” menu → “Options” → “Mail” tab → “Editor Options” button → “Proofing” tab
2. Check the “Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces” box.

For 2013 it’s:

1. Select the line you want to indent back.
2. There is a button in the “Home” tab titled “decrease indent” or “decrease list level”.
3. Left click this button.
