I want to insert two landscape pages in to my otherwise portrait Word 2010 document but maintain the sequential page numbering i.e. my final portrait page before the landscape pages is 38, so the first landscape page should be 39 and the second 40, the next page is portrait so should be 41.
Except I can't make it work properly – it's driving me nuts! Please help.
Normally when you use chapter-figure numbering in a caption, the numbering is inserted using fields like this:
{ STYLEREF 1 \s }.{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 1 }
where "1" means built-in style "Heading 1"
I think in this case you will have to insert a { SEQ } field at the beginning of each chapter (e.g. in the chapter heading) like this
{ SEQ Chapter \h }
then replace the { STYLEREF } field by another { SEQ } field like this:
{ SEQ Chapter \c }
(You could put * ARABIC in there like the other field, but it isn't really necessary)
There are other possibilities, but that's probably the simplest. You'll need to check that Tables of Figures, corss references etc. work as expected (I think they do).
You can paste the Table into a Text Box, then rotate the Text Box (answer via Quora):
Though the table will be still editable, while editing a shape that has text inside, Word resets the text temporarily to the default orientation.
Here are the steps:
Create a table. Then select all the table contents using the icon on one of the table corners. Copy the selection.
Create an empty textbox outside the table, right click on the textbox and choose “Add text”.
Paste the table you have copied inside the textbox. Note that the size of the textbox will affect how the table will look like. Unless there’s enough space inside.
Rotate the textbox(which will consequently rotate all its content including the table) using ordinary rotation icon(the green circle).

Use section breaks.
Place the cursor at the end of the last line of text of your page 38 portrait page, then go to Page Layout tab > Breaks > Section Breaks > Next Page.
You will then see a section break marker. Now, change the orientation (in your case pages 39-40) to Landscape.
Then insert another section break at the end of the pages you just changed to landscape orientation, and change the orientation of the succeeding pages (41-up) back to portrait.
