Word – How to insert a scrollable block in Word

I am editing a Word document. I want to insert a big block of XML in a cell of a table.

I want to insert a scrollable text block. How can I do that ?

This quest looks simple, but I have not found any way to achieve that.

I have Office Pro Plus 2010.

You can use an ActiveX Textbox to add a dynamically editable and scrollable text box to your document:

On the Word Ribbon, under tab Developer, click icon Legacy Tools (or press ALT+ L, N). A drop-down menu appears.
From drop-down menu, under section ActiveX Controls, click the Text Box (ActiveX Control) icon (or press ALT+L, N, T). Word creates a text box field at the cursor position. By default, the text box is opened in the design mode. You can expand the control to the desired size.
To change the properties of the text box, select the text box and then click Properties (ALT+L, L). The Properties sheet appears. You will want to change the EnterKeyBehavior, MultiLine and ScrollBars properties.
Exit design mode by clicking on the button under the Developer tab and you should now have an editable and scrollable multi-line text box in your document.

I know this is a long time since this question was asked, but is is actually possible by adding a custom XML part to your document :)

Create a xml file with the properties you want (you can make this as many levels as you like)

XML exampel:

<properties xmlns="CustomDocumentPropperties">
    <document>
        <documentNumber></documentNumber>
        <documentCategory></documentCategory>
    </document>
    <employee>
        <name></name>
        <hireDate></hireDate>
        <title></title>

    <company>
        <address></address>
    </company>
</properties>

Save the file as xml e.g. "MyProperties.xml"

Add the xml file to your document (only tested in word 2013 but should be possible in 2010)

Developer -> XML Mapping Pane

(if your developer ribbon is not visible you can find it in File -> Options -> Costomize Ribbon, and set checkmark in the Developer ribbon tab)

In the XML Mapping Pane click the drop down box and choose 'Add new part...' and select the XML file you just created.
Use the properties in your document

Now your properties has been added to the document and you can use them by selecting your properties in the XML Mapping Pane.

Right-click on the property you want in your document, and choose 'Insert Content Control' and choose the Content Control you like to edit your properties.

Word – How to export word document to PDF and have selectable text

By default Microsoft Word renders a document to PDF with selectable text. Make sure you are going Word Ribbion -> Save As -> PDF or XPS - > Publish.

I think what you are doing at the moment is printing to the Adobe PDF virtual printer which will render the document to PDF as an "image" which will not allow copy and paste of text.
