I am writing a paper using Word 2010 Beta and need to horizontally and vertically center my title page. I can horz. center but when I do a vertical center it applies that to the entire document. How do I do a vertical center on just a single page?

Unfortunately, Microsoft Word has no option to change color of individual pages in a document. Since it is hardcoded in the program, there is no way to change this behavior (page color always applies to whole document).
However, there is a workaround. If you cover the page with a text box and fill the text box with whatever color you want, you can have individually colored pages. This is not a productive method but the only one I can suggest.
Go to the last page you want to keep vertical (Portrait) then select Page Layout | Breaks | Next Page.
Now click anywhere in the page where you want to have the horizontal page (Landscape) and go to Page Layout | Orientation and select Landscape
Do the same steps for the following page, the one after the landscaped one, but this time choose Portrait. Only do this if you want to restore the Portrait orientation back to normal.

Insert a text box, then click on Format - then Align. It will give you an option for the middle of the page.
