Windows – Unidentified network under Windows 8

Today I cannot connect my Windows 8 laptop to my wireless network at home. The Wi-Fi router is a Netgear DG834G though I think it is fine as several other machines connect to the internet through it without problems, including other Windows 8 machines.

The symptoms are that sticks for ages "identifying" and then pronounces that my Wi-Fi is an "unidentified network".

I have tried

Resetting the TCP/IP (using netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt)
Removing the Hyper-V windows component
'Forgetting' the network and reconnecting
Umpteen restarts
Removing the Wi-Fi adapter from the network bridge (and I don't know where the bridge came from)
Disabling and re-enabling the adapter
Running a virus check

None of these work.

What has worked is to swap from "automatic private IP address" to "user configured" in the "Alternative configuration" tab of the IPv4 wireless adapter settings properties.

At least I have it working, but I would like to swap back to the automatic settings if possible. Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it properly?

(N.B. One thing that struck me as odd is that when fixed the "details…" for the Wi-Fi status include the IPv4 values I'd expect, but when broken they include an "Autoconfiguration IPv4 address" of 169.254.242.222; what's that?)

I should have thought of this earlier, but it is now solved.

The solution was to power cycle the router.

I have a really similar problem but I was told that it might be malware etc and i checked with malwareBytes, bitDefender and other anti virus programs.

But I'm still having this issue, I have one other computer in the same network which shows no problems related to this.

I even tried to boot this computer in safe mode and the problem goes away.

I've suspicious that it might be a web traffic filtering virus that somehow delays my internet connection (only http or https) because in some games I play the ping is like 50 ms but in http traffic ping goes like 1900 ms which is nuts.

My internet is supposed to be 4 mbps but in this computer i only get 2 mbps downloaod and 0.10 uploaod which is crazy considering my other computer connected to the same modem gets 0.60 mbps upload.

By the way this started about a month or two ago.

Resetting gone wrong

You have Teredo enabled, but your system hasn't correctly identified your public IPv4 address. This is due to a double NAT situation (you are behind two home routers both doing NAT, or you have one router and your ISP is also NATting your connection); Teredo addresses encode what should be the public IPv4 address, but yours encodes the address 192.168.1.100, a private address. This only happens in a double NAT setup.

Since this gives you a mostly-nonfunctional or completely broken IPv6 address, and IPv6 is preferred to IPv4, this will slow down your connectivity to any IPv6 enabled web site (Google, Facebook, many others).

I always recommend disabling Teredo, ISATAP and 6to4, all of which are IPv6 transition technologies with various pitfalls, unless you actually intend to use them.

Open an elevated command prompt by right-clicking the Command Prompt icon and selecting Run as Administrator, and enter the following commands:

netsh int ipv6 isatap set state disabled
netsh int ipv6 6to4 set state disabled
netsh int teredo set state disabled

Each should return The command completed successfully.

Then restart your computer.
