Windows – Task manager does not open after deleting Process Explorer

I've installed Process explorer on my Windows 8 64 bit system. Few days later I have removed Process explorer again but the standard Task Manager won't open any more. How to fix this?

You have selected that Process Explorer should replace Taskmanager.

Delete the taskmgr.exe key in the registry under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\

Now You will be able to run Taskmanager again.

My guess would be that Task Manager takes into account the current CPU speed and thus shows utilisation relative to the top speed. Task Manager just takes the CPU utilisation as returned from the system. In your case they are off by a factor of two, just like the current and maximum CPU speed.

You could try changing your power plan not do clock down the CPU to see whether they then report the same.

Windows 7/8 – How to Restore Default Task Manager

Delete the registry following registry entry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\taskmgr.exe

Just tested it with process Explorer. The entry doesn't exist on Windows 7, unless I select "Replace task manager" within Process Explorer.
