Windows – Resupply Credentials to Printer Windows 7

I'm working on my personal laptop and attach to various drives, machines, printers, etc. as needed. I'm NOT connected directly to the domain.

Due to password change restrictions, I do not let it store my password, instead I reauthorize each time I need a resource (not that big a deal really).

Our passwords change every 90 days and I had a situation where the printer kept trying to reconnect with the old stored password. After 5 fails, my account would lock out and I'd have to visit IT Support. Lots of fun.

Every other resource lets me respecify the credentials when I want to map to it. \SERVER\SHARE and it prompts me.

However, when I add a printer, I give my credentials and tell it not to save them. Works fine UNTIL a reboot. Then the printer is still there just fine and I can print to it, however all documents are just "pending" because the printer is "offline".

How can I take an existing printer and resupply the credentials so that it will come back online? Deleting the printer and re-adding it is WAY overkill.

Solved...

Quite simple really

net use \\server\printer password /user:domain\userid

I put that into a batch file and then can just run it.

I can also add it via PowerShell, but that's another story... :)

You have established that your printer is online, and can be connected to across the network and a web-browser. That's excellent.

The next step is making sure your Windows device for this printer is configured properly.

What you need to do is open the "Printer Properties" dialog for the printer in question (Start --> Devices and Printers --> right-click on printer, choose "Printer Properties")

Then, choose the Ports tab, and make sure that the port with the checkmark next to it, correctly represents the network address that your printer is at.

Rebooting and restarting your computer, printer and/or print-spooler, or upgrading the printer memory should not affect this setting (and if they do, I would start to question whether your printer was set to use DHCP, or had other even more arcane problems).

In case your network is using DHCP for printers, then it may make sense to set the port for your Windows 7 printer to a DNS name instead of an address, so that if/when it changes in the future, your computer will be able to resolve the name to an address.

For completeness, you can manage credentials at the command line or in batch script with cmdkey.exe (located in %windir%\system32).

For example, to add (or update) the credentials on server.domain.tld:

cmdkey.exe /add:server.domain.tld /user:username /pass:password

or for the entire domain:

cmdkey.exe /add:*.domain.tld /user:username /pass:password

/user can also take domain\username or username@domain

Instead of opening Windows Vault you could run a simple batch script that would prompt you for your new password:

set /p pw=Enter your new password:
cmdkey.exe /add:*companydomain.tld /user:myusername /pass:%pw%
