I recently uninstalled GIMP on my Vista laptop, but there is still an Open with GIMP option on the context menu for most image file types, like JPEG and PNG. Clicking this option results in an error dialog.
Is there any way to remove it?

Most of the menu items that used for all files and folders can be found by looking at one of these keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFileSystemObjects\ShellExItems that are specific to folders can usually be found in one of these keys instead:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Or use some freeware NirSoft tools like ShellMenuView or ShellExView.
Easier answer: Use NirSoft's FileTypes Manager like so:
In the upper pane, find and select the .JPG Extension.
Create a "New Action" (Actions/New Action or lower pane/right-click/New Action).
Set the Action Name and Menu Caption to "Edit" and browse to the .EXE that should edit the file.
Click OK to save your changes.
Presto, now Windows does what you want.
Apparently, this new setting just overrides the existing Edit command.

You can use Crap Cleaner (CCleaner) to deal with it or edit the registry for HKLM_Classes and look for the .JPG, .PNG, .BMP, there's a key in there for Open, I have given jpegfile as an example, do the same for .PNG and so on... HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell\Open with GIMP (Backup your registry before doing this..)
