Windows 10 just updated without my permission. It asked earlier today, and I said NO. I came back from a short walk just now and Windows was in the middle of an update.
Microsoft Word came up at boot, but none of my 3 previously opened documents were open. Word automatically started with a blank document. I opened the document I was working on, and a brief message popped up (2 seconds), with no buttons, that said "pick up where you left off 5 minutes ago," and then disappeared. I assumed I was okay, until I looked at the document. This version is from YESTERDAY. I have worked on this for HOURS today.

To answer your question, look in your Word options under Save settings to see where temporary files are stored. You may be able to get them back from there
