I have a SATA disk in an external eSATA enclosure. Most of the time it's powered off, but when I turn it on windows hangs for 15-30 seconds. No sound, no mouse, nothing. Then after 15-30 seconds, everything is fine again.
What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?
The enclosure is a Vantec Nexstar 3, and the disks have both been Western Digitals. (I only have the two to play with.)
The 5v power brick needs to be at least 1 amp of output, otherwise it will require USB power also.

Yes, it's possible to use an internal SATA 3.5 HDD powered by your independent power supply. There is no extra circuitry as far as I know, and the only thing you need is the SATA to eSATA cable.
If you have an eSATAp port, you can just use a compatible cable and it will provide power directly from the port.
Here is a picture of an eSATAp to SATA cable which provides direct power from the port.
