Windows – Monitor resolution messed up somehow

I purchased the Westinghouse 22" LCD LCM-22w3 a few years ago, and now it's been acting up on me. I just booted into Windows 7(without changing any settings), and the default resolution is 1600×1024, and it allows me to select a refresh rate of up to 85 Hz(it didn't let me do that). I usually have my resolution set to 1680×1050 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Now, that resolution does not even appear in the list. Does anyone have any idea of what could be the problem and how to fix it?

Edit: I am not sure if this will help, but when I go to change the screen resolution, the monitor is known as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor". It used to be referred to as "Generic PnP Monitor). I tried to disable Generic Non-PnP Monitor, but when I restart, it uses that monitor again.

Edit 2: I created a custom .inf file using Powerstrip, but that does not work either. The monitor settings are being stubborn.

Look into updating your drivers for your Video Card. Once that is done see if there is a separate video settings options for your video card listed in the control panel.

Usually when certain manufacturers install their own settings panels they override the video settings with the OS. Try messing with the resolutions listed in that control panel option

When I used a EDID-blocking VGA KVM switch, I used a small script to fix the resolution after logging in:

xrandr --newmode "1600x1200_60.00"  162.00  1600 1664 1856 2160  1200 1201 1204 1250 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1600x1200_60.00
xrandr --output VGA-1 --mode 1600x1200_60.00

I think I got the mode line from xrandr somehow (with the monitor plugged in directly). I tried putting it in the X configuration file, but the stupid X server kept ignoring it for various spurious reasons.

Windows – Add custom resolution to Control Panel in Windows

I upgraded to Windows 10 an encountered a problem with my TV's resolution (plugged in as a HDMI monitor): though I could still "set" a custom resolution in NVidia's Control Panel, it would keep the Windows 10 resolution, even after restarting and such, with fully upgraded drivers.

I fixed it by following the advice from here, which says:

Go to the Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter and check for an option that says something like 'List all modes'.

Basically, go into (Windows) Control Panel, to change the resolution, select the monitor/TV you want to change, click "Advanced Settings" (in Windows 10 and I think Windows 8 too at least), go to the Adapter tab (first one), and click the "List All Modes" button. I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the list that pops up, and my custom resolution that was previously set in the NVidia Control Panel (but currently unused) was there. Select the resolution you want, click "OK", and then click "OK" or "Apply", and it will give you that resolution.

Update: sometimes this doesn't work... after my NVidia driver updated, the custom resolution reverted, and redoing it and restarting my computer didn't fix it - nor did the custom resolution show up in "List All Modes"! The solution to this problem was to simply unplug my TV and plug it back in, and when I went to Control Panel again the custom resolution finally showed up.
