Windows Media Player lists every track in one album twice

Using WMP12 on W7. I downloaded a ZIP of MP3 files (a free album) and unzipped into one of the "My Music" scanned locations. WMP added it to the library, but most of the tracks are listed twice.

There is only one copy of each .MP3 file… WMP simply shows each track twice, including the same track number.

I looked online but only found solutions to wipe the entire DB and re-scan. Surely there is a better way?

This might be caused if the Windows Media Library is corrupted. You may try to rebuild the Media Library and check if that helps.

To rebuild the library, follow the steps mentioned below.

Shutdown windows media player.
Stop the media sharing service.
Go to Start; type Services.msc
Right-click on the “Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service” and select Stop.
Navigate to “c:\Users\”your username”\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media
Player.
Now delete the files named CurrentDatabase_***.wmdb and
LocalMLS_*.wmdb.
Start the media sharing service.
Now start Windows Media Player and watch it build up your library
again.

just tryied myself. basically I wanted to save my library from external HD created with XP, and import in MP12 on Win7. No way to import it! So I opened the library with text pad, and it shows up as text file. The I have created a dummy playlist with MP12 (I called it "test") and open it with note pad as well. So, it is done! You just have to copy your original playlist (in my case the one created with XP) into the new one created by MP12.

For me, I had to cheange the header and everything went fine:

With MP11 in XP my header was:

That I had to change into:

Surprisingly, its about as easy to do in Windows Media Player as it is in iTunes. Here is a link to an article for vista, and while some of the menu options differ, the steps are all the same:

In the instructions where it says "the arrow below the library tab", just click the "Organize" button. The rest follows pretty closely.

Here is a digest:

click "Organize", then "Options"
On the library tab be sure to check "Rename music files using rip music settings" and "Rearrange music in rip music folder, using rip music settings". These settings will allow windows media player to organize the music in the folder you select on the "Rip Music" tab, so make sure this is the parent folder of all your music.
Click "Apply" and "OK"
click "Organize", then click "Apply media information changes".

Your library will be updated and all songs that you had added to the library that we not located in your music folder (the one specified in the "Rip Music" tab) will be moved, renamed, etc.
