Internet Explorer is both a Modern UI app and a desktop app in Windows 8, but so far I can only find mail as a Modern UI app.
Is there some way to access it in desktop mode? It might be nice to have an old-fashioned mail window open on part of the screen while other desktop apps are open.
Official answer (as per MS docs) to the general query "Can you access the Metro version of a non-default browser in Windows 8?"
Short answer: As per Microsoft's guidelines, only the default browser can access/participate in the "Metro style experience". So this behaviour is clearly intentional and unless Microsoft changes its guidelines or a browser-maker flouts them or some sort of hack is created, we're stuck with it.

Suppose Firefox Nightly is set as the default browser. Go to Control Panel / Programs / Default Programs / Set Default Programs / (Firefox) Nightly / Choose defaults for this program:
Now uncheck Protocols like FTP, HTTP and HTTPS:
Now when you run IE (even though it's not the default), does the Metro version run?
The easier way to differentiate them, it's the tile background. For Modern UI Apps, the color is the color chosen by the developer. For the Desktop Apps, the background is a gradient from right to left. (#333 to #666 I think...)
I use Windows 8 for over 2 months and still no other way.

I don't know what the terms are, but it's possible to recompose the desktop alongside Metro/WinRT apps. You can click-grab the top of a Metro app and snap it to a side of your screen. Then you can move another Metro app in the free space, or put your desktop there.
