I have Windows 7 64bit, and I cannot find a way to show the full name string of files and folders when I am in "View > Small Icons or Medium Icons".
On Vista, for example, when you clicked once on a file or folder with a long name, the full name was expanded and was displayed. Now, with Win 7 64bit, it is only displayed if you try to rename the file or folder.
In Windows 7 these get saved by default, but under one important condition.
You need a clean BagMRU in HKCR for that. Google on how to clean it. And that also needs to be small/clean, which implies the more folders you browse through time, the bigger it gets and the closer you get to explorer ignoring the BagsMRU settings. Once BagsMRU have been cleared, explorer will default all folder to a default setting. From there on, each time you set up a particular folder, it will remember those settings for that folder only by creating a BagMRU entry. Parents and child folders views will vary.
(For music folder, I've set up bit rate and duration instead of artists etc, it worked for a month or so, now it reverted to default music folder details view because I often have to create new folders and browse them, which lead to this limitation of explorer)
No, you will not loose any data. When you press Yes to the following dialogue box,
It will simply move/copy all files to the folder. If both folders contain files of the same name, OS will ask for what to do, you may replace the file, don't copy it or keep both in the new destination.
Caution: Windows does not check the contents of a file, only the name. So, if you have two image files of same name but different content, os will treat them as similar files and ask for an option. If you click to replace the file, your file will be lost.

Some of these people are answering questions that you are not asking. I think they believe you have a problem finding the full path of your files/folder. Anyway, I think I may have a solution for you. If you right click the desktop-> personalize, then click "window color", then "click advanced appearance settings.."; from there you can try and mess around with the icon size, icon spacing vertical/horizontal, plus a few other ones. I had a problem with the way my icons were being displayed and this was the only area I found in Windows 7 64 bit where you could change/edit icon settings. Hope this helps.
