Windows – How to delete the Windows Explorer address bar history

Note: I am NOT referring to Internet Explorer.

I am using Windows XP and Windows Server 2008 and need to delete the history values from the file browser (aka Windows Explorer). Somebody put a password into the address bar as ftp://user:pass, and now I can't delete the value.

Some forums say to delete this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths

In Windows XP, the key doesn't exist, and in Windows Server 2008, the key is there, but deleting it doesn't seem to help.

For XP, you need to use CCleaner, select delete History and Recently Typed URLs from Internet Explorer and Recent Documents and Other Explorer MRUs from Windows Explorer

For Windows Server 2008, log into the FTP site, press ALT, then do File > Login, at which point you can change or delete the password.

Use CCleaner to get rid of 'em.

Also, check if the entry exists in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

Command line : If you are doing this from the machine with running ftp : ftp 127.0.0.1, enter user name, enter password, 'pwd' for current directory, 'cd ..' will take you back a directory.

Explorer : ftp://user@pass:127.0.0.1 explorer is not as useful as most other ftp interfaces. You will have to make sure that you specify that the user is configured to log into the ftp root as its home directory in the ftp server config. You might find it easier to navigate using programs like wsftp, filezilla or ftpsurfer. You can also mount your ftp as a drive with explorer, nerveless you still need to setup logon directory to root in your server config.

You can use tools like Webdrive, Netdrive, Expandrive, Anyclient to mount your ftp as a drive with windows, with those tools you don't need to change your server config, you can specify to mount the root directory on explorer. http://alternativeto.net/software/webdrive/

Windows – How to locate/delete the view history of Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer remembers the settings (position, size, column positions, and so on) for every folder you open by storing it under the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam 
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell 
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

Nirsoft LastActivityView uses the above registry keys to add the View Folder in Explorer event. If you delete the subkeys under the above registry keys (With RegEdit), Windows will "forget" the settings of all folders.
