Windows – How to create a shortcut in C:\

Is there a way to create a shortcut that lives in C:\ (as opposed to my desktop), and points to a folder also in C:\?

(I'm not sure whether the tool shortcut.exe can do this at all, but in any case, I can't find any versions of it for Windows 7.)

C:\ has some access restrictions for security reasons by default, but you can always create a shortcut on the desktop and then cut-paste it into C:\. Keep in mind that you may have to adjust shortcut's access privileges using Properties window, Security tab.

I found a reasonable cross-platform solution. This HTML document could be used as a shortcut to stackoverflow.com, and it would immediately redirect to that site when opened from the desktop:

This cannot be done with standard Windows functionality. A homemade solution is needed here.

Download Shortcut.zip and extract it to C:\Windows\system32. This program will allow us to create shortcuts.

Create a batchfile called 'sendToExample.cmd' with the following contents, don't forget to change 'targetfolder':

@echo off
:: change this to whatever you need
set targetfolder=d:\Temp
shortcut /f:"%targetfolder%\%~n1%~x1.lnk" /a:c /t:%1

Create a shortcut in your SendTo folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo) to this batch file.

You're done! Shortcuts will automagically be created!
