I have VMware Player, and I run Ubuntu with it on my Windows 7 system. Now I want to copy some files from my Windows folders into the VMware virtual hard disk, so that I can view these files on Ubuntu.

How do I do that?

Mount a shared folder that's on the Windows host onto Ubuntu. That way you don't even need to copy them.

Go to Virtual Machine » Virtual Machine Settings » Shared Folders.

What happens is that vmware lock some files while it's running.

So, there's no need to recreate VM or rebooting windows whatsoever. All you need to do is to kill all vmware processes.

So, just open windows task manager and look for vmware in the processes tab, kill these process and restart vmware.

Download them from VMware Tools Operating System Specific Packages.

Installation, from VMware Tools for Linux Guests :

su -
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
cd /tmp
tar zxf /mnt/vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz
umount /mnt
cd vmware-tools-distrib
./vmware-install.pl
exit

In an X terminal, launch the VMware Tools background application:

vmware-toolbox &
