While connected to a VPN (SwissVPN service), a content filter at a site I'm working at blocked a web page. This was perplexing, since the local site's filter should not be able to see my traffic, right?
So I assume my web browsing activity was not going through the VPN tunnel. How can I configure the OS to send ALL traffic though the currently connected VPN tunnel? I'm using OS X Lion and Windows 7.
Create the file /etc/ppp/ip-up with following content:
#!/bin/sh
/sbin/route add <SUBNET> -interface $1
replacing <SUBNET> with subnet, you want to route through VPN (for ex. 192.168.0.0/16)
execute as root:
chmod 0755 /etc/ppp/ip-up
This file will be executed each time you connect to VPN.
The parameters given to the script:
$1: The VPN interface (e.g. ppp0)$2: Unknown, was 0 in my case$3: IP of the VPN server$4: VPN gateway address$5: Regular (non-vpn) gateway for your lan connectionsI think, for what you want to do, you can use the Proxy Switchy! extension for Chrome and create a different profile for your VPN and set the Network in the Proxy Switchy! settings as so:
This seems to be the easiest way to achieve what you want as selecting a profile will route through that specific connection.
All your other traffic will be routed through whatever the local connection is, and your Chrome traffic will be routed through the VPN.

You can enable that feature on OS X by going to:
System Preferences → Network → Your VPN Connection → Advanced → Send all traffic over VPN
On your Windows 7 box you can go to:
That should make it so all traffic is sent over the VPN on both systems.
