I have a 24" ViewSonic VX2453 monitor that supports 1920x1080p, connected using HDMI. However at that resolution, the desktop goes off the screen. Using the Nvidia control panel, I have to set it to a custom resolution of 1804×1014 to display correctly.
The monitor has its drivers properly installed (the correct model name shows up in control panel after installing the drivers), and I'm running 64 bit Win7 Ultimate. I have a GeForce 560 Ti card, if that helps.
Why does this happen?
The most likely reason is that the EDID data of your monitor is corrupted or not transferred correctly.
EDID tells your system which features the monitor has and which resolution it supports.
First check if there's anything which could prevent the EDID exchange: Broken cable, damaged connector, VGA-DVI adapter, one-monitor-two-workstations switch, ...
You could try to completly disable EDID for your monitor, a quick Google search revealed that this frequently resolved similar problems for other users.
If this can't be done with the driver software, a last resort would be to disable the pins responsible for EDID on your DVI cable.

However do be careful: do your own research first and best try with a separate DVI cable first.
As stated by Dell and confirmed by many users (me included), the HDMI port of the U2711 is passive, meaning it gets whatever the video card sends. It IS possible to run the U2711 at native (full) resolution over the HDMI port, provided that a) your video card supports 2560x1440 over the HDMI port, b) your cable is at least version 1.3 for a higher bandwidth capacity. Since HDMI is supposed to be used for displaying multimedia video streams, and actual commercial video highest resolution is 1920x1080p, not many cards shows a higher resolution available when choosing, for example in control panel. To be able to use a higher resolution to the one showed it may be necessary to create a custom resolution, or edit some registry/EDID files, depending on your video card and OS.
In my case, with a Intel HD integrated video card, the only necessary thing was to create a custom resolution via the Intel Graphics control panel, reboot, and choose the new resolution from the control panel normally.
Note that altering the default resolutions and files may cause some other problems, like flickering, necessity to lower the refresh rate of the video card, or possibly worse. You should go with extreme care and read first the forums and sites other people suggested before.

I found the real solution.
"AV" means: resize the image to hide the broadcast data from TV/etc
"PC" means: use the image as-is, 1:1
I had the same issue with both a GeForce and a Radeon, didn't see anyone suggest this fix, everyone was going on about updating drivers and adjusting tricky driver-settings.
