Windows – Can’t access the Internet in VMware Workstation

I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS.

In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet.

I've tried the following but with no success:

Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work.
Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC – neither of them work.

I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months – previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?

Select bridged networking for the VM.
Reboot the VM.
Troubleshoot networking in the VM as if it were a real PC on your network that can't connect to the Internet. As an example:
1. What does ifconfig -a say? Do you have a real IP address from your network? If you use static IPs, then go configure one for this VM in Ubuntu.
2. Can you ping the host's (Win7) IP address from the guest?
3. Can you ping the private address of your router or default gateway? 3d) Can you ping www.superuser.com?

It's likely something in your guests network settings changed, maybe it thinks you have a new network card, maybe name resolution isn't working, maybe some firewall settings changed.

Network Adapter Properties

If you have multiple network adapters (including both virtual and hardware) installed, go to each one and make sure that "VMware Bridge Protocol" is only checked on the adapter you actually connect to the internet with. In my case, I have some virtual adapters installed by VMware, my bluetooth radio, and an extra wifi adapter installed by my wireless drivers (for connection sharing). VMware will by default install this Bridge protocol on all adapters it did not install itself, and even if you only use one network adapter, there might be extra virtual ones confusing VMware.

My solution was to delete and readd the network interface:

Shutdown your VM
Go to "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" and remove your network adapter
Boot your VM and turn it off
Open the .vmx file with your editor and delete all lines which start with "ethernet0"
Boot your VM and turn it off
Go to "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" and add a new network adapter
Boot your VM and open a terminal

Execute ip link. The output shows all the interfaces like this:

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: ens33: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:0c:29:a5:cd:b6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Find your interface (ens33 in my case) and set it to up:

sudo ip link set ens33 up
```
Let your interface search an IP Address:
```
sudo dhclient ens33 -v
```

Worked with Windows 10 Host, Ubuntu 19.10 Guest and VMware Workstation 15 Player.
