What better way than trying it out. I was sure of what I've to say, but I did try out scenarios you mentioned. Details below:
The People App in Windows 8 does list Contacts from all of your accounts and shows information combined from Google, Facebook and other connected accounts.
However information from sources remain independent. They are not updated or modified without your explicit consent.
Coming directly to your questions,
1) Your Facebook contacts and Google contacts will remain independent and will not show up in other services. I recently installed Windows 8 Pro and connected Facebook, Google, Outlook and few other accounts. My Google contacts page continues to show only my previous GMail contacts and Facebook contacts are not listed.
2) Your Google contacts will remain as they are. No details (including the photo) would be changed just because you connected your Facebook account to the People App on Windows 8.
3) For editing any contact, you need to explicitly specify to which account the changes must take effect:
Of-course you would not be able to edit the contact's Facebook info, but you can choose between your GMail and Outlook accounts.
I edited the Work address and Company information for a contact (after choosing GMail). The information immediately showed up in my Google Contacts (accessed thru Web).
So its absolutely safe to connect all of your accounts in Windows 8. It would enhance the experience and at the same time, cause no trouble!
I had this same issue which was caused by the server using a self signed ssl certificate.
You can add an exchange account using a self signed ssl certificate to the Windows 8 Mail app. There is a lot of information on the internet indicating the contrary, however you CAN do it.
It requires installing the certificate using MMC (not cermgr) to [Console Root\Certificates (Local Computer)\Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates].
- You must download the certificate to your Windows 8 device. If you have access to Outlook Web Access you can browse that website, click the certificate in the browser and save as a p7b file.
- From the desktop run MMC.exe
- Choose File->Add/Remove Snap-in...
- Choose Certificates, then click the Add button, and OK.
- Navigate to [Console Root\Certificates (Local Computer)\Trusted Root Certification Authorities\Certificates].
- Right click the "Certificates" folder, select All Tasks->Import...
- Choose "Local Machine", Next.
- Browse to the certificate file you saved on your device and click Next.
You might be able to install the certificate to a different folder however I have not tested that.
You can probably do the same thing by double clicking (opening) the p7b file, right clicking the certificate and selecting "Install Certificate...", then installing into Local Machine.... Although I have not tested that.
Once you have done this you will be able to add your Exchange account to Main/People/Calendar.
I have tested this on a Windows RT device and it does work.
Update: There are a couple other ways to install the certificate so if you are familiar with those you can choose the method you are comfortable with.
Also if you have a failover Exchange site with a self signed certificate, be sure to install the certificate from that server as well.

It appears that this is a bug within the software. The current fix is to uninstall and the re-install the Mail, People, Calendar, and Messaging App.
Before Uninstalling be sure to sync all your settings: Win + C -> Setting -> Change PC Settings -> Sync Your Settings. Set all to be "on"
To Uninstall the App, right click (or Long press hold) on any of the apps (Mail, Calendar, People, Messaging) and then selecting uninstall:
You'll be prompted to uninstall, just select "Uninstall" again:
Finally, open the App Store, and then search for "Mail". The first option is the "Mail, People, Message, and Calendar" app combo. Install it.
You'll have to wait for a few mins (about 5 for me) for all of the contacts, settings, and such to download and sync. After that, the problem is resolved.
