Windows 10 update 1803 renamed the user account folder with .000 suffix

I installed the Windows 10 update version 1803 yesterday night. Some time later, I realized that for some reason, it had renamed my original User's folder with a .000 suffix. My user account name is still the same. There is now a new folder with the original username, but there are only a couple of folders inside it. All of the documents, downloads, application data, etc. is inside the folder suffixed with the .000. Opening the cmd prompt opens directly into the folder with the .000 suffix.

I am able to login to my account, see desktop icons, etc. However some apps that expect data to be in the folder without the suffix are unable to load their settings. For example, Notepad++ cannot load its last saved session. Also, unable to browse downloaded files through Firefox.

I'd like to have my User folder back without the .000 suffix. Could someone tell me how. I haven't seen anything on Microsoft acknowledging this and haven't come across any fix for it.

I think you was using a Microsoft account to login, then upgrade system to 1803 version.

Try to roll back to the previous Windows version.

Sign-in your PC with a local account.

Upgrade again under the local account.

Note, don’t use built-in Administrator account as local account.

Try the following:

Create a second admin user unless you already have one.
Reboot your machine and login as the second administrator user, do not log in as tyler.
Press Windows+X and click Command Prompt (Admin)

Now type:

rename "c:\users\tyler" "Tyler"

You don't have to change anything in the registry or elsewhere.

Sign out and sign in as tyler

This works because tyler and Tyler are considered the same and works in all currently supported versions of Windows.

If you get an Access Denied, first verify the permissions on the folder:

icacls "c:\Users\tyler"

among other things, it should display:

BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F)

if not, you need to grant permissions first, otherwise make sure you are running as elevated admin:

whoami /groups | findstr /c:" S-1-5-32-544 " | findstr /c:" Enabled group"

This should show somethings, otherwise your account is not elevated.

I had this problem as well. For me, in my original C:\Users\Username folder one folder remaining in it, Index. When opening this folder in Explorer I was presented with the well-known dialog asking me to grant permission to this folder. I reverted to the previous Windows 10 version, 1709, and then I moved the search index to a different directory, removing C:\Users\Username\Index. I tried the update to 1803 again and now my user directory was not renamed to C:\Users\Username.000.

I suggest that you check if the deepest subfolders of the folders that remain in your original user folder are accessible. If not, you may have the same problem that I had. Revert to the previous version, fix the access problems, and try the update again.

When reverting to a previous Windows version, I advise you to make a USB recovery drive because for me reverting lead to a broken Windows installation once.
