Windows – Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586 errors with 0x8024200D

I have seen a few people with this problem on forums, but nobody seems to have a solution yet.
Windows says I should restart because I have an update pending (this is 10586). During restart there is no indication that any updated are being installed or have failed to be installed. Once I log back into Windows I am told that there was a problem installing updates.

In the event log I can see:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x8024200D: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586.

Does anybody know what is wrong or how to fix this?

Here is how I fixed this issue:

I booted into safe mode (using MSCONFIG).
I deleted the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
I turned off safe mode and booted into windows normally.
I re-downloaded and attempted to install the update again.

If you have encountered this error:

You basically have two options:

1. Create an installation disk by using the Media Creation Tool.

2. The simple method would be to visit this website and click "Update Now".

3. You can also download the Version 1511 .ISO from the Download Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File) website, create your own installation media, and install it that way. As of July 29th 2016, the only Windows 10 version .ISO that can be download is Version 1607

4. If you were using Windows 10 Enterprise the update can be downloaded from the Volume Licensing Service Center.

I have verified either option works. You can also wait a few days and a second check will automatically be performed. All of these options as of 11/30/2015 once again can be used.

Windows 10 Pro doesn’t show update 1511 (build 10586)

The issue for me was related to having used CCleaner and/or Disk Cleanup Manager (Cleanmgr.exe) to remove leftovers of previous Windows 8.1 installation. This had removed the files but not properly removed registry traces of the previous installation that were still available to Windows Update (and in fact "Settings -> Update & security -> Recovery -> Go back to Windows 8.1" function was still available, even if non-functioning). In this condition, the 31 days upgrade protection mechanism was probably broken. This might be a bug in Windows Update actually.

The following registry file removed for me the traces of Windows 8.1 previous installation (also hiding the "Recovery -> Go back to Windows 8.1") and enabling the 1511 update. Be prepared to a very long update process (>4 hours for some users). For me, the 1511 update stalled at "Preparing to install updates 32%" for at least 2 hours with OS installed on a SSD storage. For your security, backup before applying the registry edit.
