I have created a Ubuntu 14.04 VM on Virtualbox 4.3.16 (running on Windows 8). I have installed all of the Ubuntu virtualbox-guest* packages.
The highest screen resolution that I can set in the Ubuntu VM is 1280×960 (4:3). The other options are 1024×768 and 800×600. What I really want is to set the screen resolution to be identical to that of the host OS. ie. 1920×1080.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Slight change for step 3 on new version of VirtualBox for Windows Hosts. there are different versions of the additions for x86 and amd64 platforms. between setps 2 and 3 you can type ‘ls’ and see what the exact name of the additions are for your platform, then do “sudo bash ./VBoxAdditions-###.run”, replacing the ### with x86 or amd64.
Try running the sudo bash ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run command after cd-ing to the guest additions installation CD.
Make sure to turn off VM.
Then go to VitrualBox Manager > File > Preferences > Display > click Maximum Guest Screen tab and make sure to select either None or Auto (whichever works best).

Make sure you have
Auto-resize Guest Displayticked, under theViewdrop-down menu (Host + G). You can tell what it's currently set to by its tiny icon. Then try moving the window around, i.e. restoring it down/maximising.Ubuntu should then automatically scale its display with respect to its window size.
