This screen in vim

When using vim, I sometimes get myself into this screen that has multiple command line rows. What is this screen for? How do I take advantage of it or get out of it?

That is the command line history window. Check here.

It appears when you type q: (you also have a search history if you type q/). This windows allows you to edit your command and search history. Press ctrl + c twice to cancel.

You can use the 'wincmd' command to move to different windows as if you're pressing CTRL+W.

vim file4 -c 'split file2' -c 'vsplit file1' -c 'wincmd j' -c 'vsplit file3'

This will arrange the files as:

file1   file2
file3   file4

How it works: opens file4. Splits horizontally so file2 is above it. Splits vertically so file1 is to the left, moves to the next window (file1) and vertically splits again.

Vim motion commands in the Vim command-line

When i need to edit a long command in command line, i use q+:

then i see a list of my last commands and i can move with regular vim motions and it's easy to edit.
