How can the user agent be changed in Opera?
The per-site preferences (tab Network, field Browser identification) lists
But can it be set to an arbitrary string (for example, googleinstantisreallyirritating)?

Opera seems to have a problem with NTLM (Windows authentication) proxy servers.
This seems to be a common workaround: NTLMAPS
And it's described here.
NTLMAPS is a little proxy server which you run on your PC; it sits between Opera (once you configure Opera to use it) and your Windows auth proxy server, and handles the NTLM authentication which Opera cannot yet do.
The extension User-Agent Switcher for Chrome has a Permanent Spoof list, where you can set specific user agents for certain domains.
Add the extension to Chrome.
Open chrome-extension://djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg/options.html.
Click Permanent Spoof list.
Enter the domain of the particualr website, select the desired user agent and click Add.

Since Opera 12 there is a new option for an arbitrary string: Open
opera:config#UserPrefs|CustomUser-Agentin the address bar, enter the desired string and click on Save at the bottom of the page. The change will apply without restart.Or you could use the extension https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/user-agent-changer/ which makes it a little bit easier.
