Word – Setting Microsoft Word completely to another language

Here are two options depending on your situation:

Situation 1: Your copy of Office was installed from a Spanish language based install media.

You will be able to set the default language to English, but core functions will use the native language of the installation media.

The only fix is to uninstall the Spanish version, and install from an English-based install media.

Situation 2: Everything seems to be English, but occasionally foreign languages appear.

In this situation, here are repair instructions for Office 2002:

1. Click the Start menu
2. Point to Programs
3. Point to Microsoft Office Tools
4. Click Microsoft Office XP Language Settings.
5. Click the Enabled Languages tab.
6. Go to the Default version of Microsoft Office box
7. Select the language you want
8. Click OK. A message will appear telling you what changes will be made.
9. Click Continue

Your error is because the chapter numbers were not correctly assigned to begin with. You have to assign them correctly before you can begin captioning figures.

1. Assign chapter numbers using a 'multilevel list' along with a style. Word needs these to be correctly assigned to properly caption the figures. Go to Home > Multilevel List and assign a number to the chapter, and update its style to 'Heading 1'

2. When you right-click your image to caption it, click on 'Numbering' and check the option 'Include chapter number'. From the drop-down box make sure that the style 'Heading 1' is selected as shown below:

Alternatively, if you want to get better looking headings you can define your own format by going to Home > Multilevel list > Define new multilevel list. Define the number format and then customize the style (fonts, font sizes, paragraph and so on) for Heading 1.
