PuTTY variant without modal message boxes

Basically I'm happy with PuTTY, but the behaviour with modal message boxes is driving me mad. My network connection changes a lot, and if I have say 20 putty connections open at the time, all of these start filling my screen with "Fatal error" boxes that I have to click one-by-one. All would be well if it would just say "disconnected" like it does after the box has been clicked away… To be short, I've been looking for a PuTTY variant with this feature implemented. It sounds to me exactly to what I need. Is there such variant?

So far, I've been through at least puttytray, nutty, kitty and futty, and they all behave the same way.

Edit: I checked out Futty, commented out some modal boxes I found and rebuilt it. Works the way I want. Of course it is not properly implemented, since it is not configurable and does not have any sort of intellect, so that's not a real resolution. Does the trick for me for now, though. I'll keep this open though in case someone would know of a variant that would have it.

It's a workaround, but you could install cygwin and use the local terminal version of putty, then use ssh from the cygwin command line.

This means your server has some connection timeout (try a look at its sshd_config file or equivalent).

You can try to play with the "keep alive" options in PuTTY or WinSCP. Here are my options for some similar case connection:

The best solution would be to create a custom session in PuTTY (with the "Close window on exit" setting changed) and load that session via the command line, but if you don't have access to the GUI, that's not easy. However, I don't know of any way to specify individual settings via the command line.

If you can edit the registry, however, you can create a session by creating a new key in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY\Sessions

where you can then add values corresponding with the session settings in the GUI. So, if you want to have the window always close on exit, you would add a DWORD value named CloseOnExit containing the value 2. Everything else not specified will stay as the default.

You would then add

-load "session name"

to your command line string, where "session name" is the name of the key you created. Put whatever other command line options after that (such as server, login name, password, etc.) and you're all set.

I've tested this myself, but it's still prudent to back up your registry before any manual editing.

Alternately, there are forks of PuTTY (such as PuTTY Tray) that feature automatic reconnection after an interruption, though I can't vouch for how well they work.
