I want to change the color scheme of all saved sessions and the default scheme.
Is there a smarter way then generating .reg files with the new scheme for each session?
How do I change the default colors for new session?

For existing sessions you can export the .reg file, replace all occurences of colors with your desired values and reimport the file. If that is not "smart" enough, you can try replacing directly in registry with some programs listed here https://superuser.com/questions/174942/registry-search-replace-tool

For future sessions, you can modify settings of the session named "Default settings" and they will be inherited by new sessions

I just had the same problem and found PuTTY session manager:

PuTTY Session Manager is a tool that allows system administrators to organise their PuTTY sessions into folders and assign hotkeys to favourite sessions. Multiple sessions can be launched with one click. Requires MS Windows and the .NET 2.0 Runtime.

It allows you to configure specific attributes of all sessions at once while leaving the distinct elements alone.

PuTTY Session Manager has no documentation, so here are instructions (correct as of version 0.50.189.0):

In PuTTY, load the default settings, change the settings you need, and save it as the default again.
Install PuTTY session manager (if you don't already have it) and start it.
Right click the PuTTY Session Manager icon in the system tray, and choose "Session Editor"
Select all sessions and click "Copy Session" at the bottom of the window.
Make sure the "Choose Session Template" dropdown is set to "Default Settings", choose "Copy only selected attributes", choose the category or individual attributes you need to change, and click "OK".
Choose whether to save a backup of your sessions before the changes are made (highly recommended).
Confirm that you want the changes to be applied.

Save the configurations for all saved sessions in PuTTY

Here is a method which involves some effort, but is much easier than recreating all 50 sessions.

Use with caution!

Make a copy of your current PuTTY settings:

Start Menu > Run then enter the following:

regedit /e putty.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY\Sessions"
```
putty.reg is now saved in C:\Documents and Settings\{yourusername} (or C:\Windows\system32 in Windows 10) -- rename it to putty_older.reg, putty_backup.reg, whatever you prefer.
Using the PuTTY GUI, load one session (i.e. your first one), make all desired changes and save the session.
Repeat step #1 so you have a new copy of putty.reg.
(Optional, could be done manually) Open both files (putty.reg and putty_backup.reg) in WinMerge and you have a complete line-by-line record of all the changes you just made.

The changes will look something like this:

"TermWidth"=dword:0000006e
"TermHeight"=dword:0000002b

Use your favorite text editor to find/replace all for the old value. E.g.

"TermWidth"=dword:'_default setting_'

*(the original code)* - replace with:

"TermWidth"=dword:0000006e

*(the new setting)*

After saving the new version of putty.reg, double-click and confirm you want to import into the registry.

The above method was tested with five sessions and worked fine.
