Using Open Office 3.1.1 for Mac (OS X 10.5.8) and trying to open PDF's. Found the Sun PDF import extension, downloaded but can't seem to get the thing to work – am i just being daft? Tried opening the .zip file with OO as it says in the 'Comments' on the download page only to get a big list of filters that doesn't contain PDF or ODF/PDF Hybrid. If i unzip the download, which file do i use?
Help much appreciated.
I think that the problem sometimes occurs when the web server you are downloading the PDF from does not serve the PDF with the correct MIME type.
When the web server serves a PDF with the correct MIME type, Chrome previews it. When the web server serves a PDF with the incorrect or generic MIME type (application/octet-stream), Chrome downloads it.
If the server returns a Content-Type of text/html Chrome will display/open the PDF directly in the browser. However, if the server returns a Content-Type of application/pdf then the browser will prompt the user to save/download the PDF.
FYI for others: if you're okay with the Chrome PDF viewer, but want only downloaded PDFs to open in your external PDF viewer (Adobe Acrobat, Foxit Reader, etc.), you don't need to disable the Chrome PDF Viewer.
Simply click the arrow next to a PDF download and select the option to use the system viewer.

As of Chrome version 59, the option below doesn't exist in Settings. I'll leave these instructions, because if they ever add it back it'll probably be in the same place.

Open Open Office and chose File->Open and there change file type to PDF (default is all files), this is the only way I can open an pdf with open office (after I add Sun PDF import extension!).
