I am running Microsoft Office Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 Enterprise. When I click on an email in the list of messages, the preview of the message in the reading pane usually will not show the images contained in the email, but instead will show a red 'X'. Sometimes this red 'X' is followed by the text "The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renmaed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location." I am using an IMAP email account. The really strange thing is that for some emails, the images will display, although they take a long time to load. How can I make the images show up in the reading pane?

Select all of the deleted messages in "deleted items" > move them to a new folder say "To be archived". Next go to FILE > Cleanup Tools > Archive. Select "To be archived" folder , select items older than "today", point to a place on your hard disk and click OK. After the archive is complete you can remove "deleted items".
Whenever you need to open your archive, just go to FILE > Open > Open data file > Navigate to your archive > OK. These messages will appear at the bottom of the mailbox tree on the left.
That's all.
It's a feature, not a bug.
Outlook shows the messages in the current folder, and if you check the option to "Show Messages from Other Folders", it will also show them in the conversation thread, but will only select by default the last from this folder.
This may be helpful: Under the View tab → Conversation Settings, set all options to "Always expand", and to indent. At least it's visible that there is a newer message you sent.
The other option as you commented is to create a Search folder to include all inbox and sent items and set it as the starting folder for outlook going to "file" - "Options" - "Advanced" and modifying Outlook start and Exit - see screenshots:

Outlook prevents the automatic download of images in email communications as a security measure to prevent potential spam. It allows images from sites in your Trusted Zone to be automatically displayed, but blocks the rest. You can override this feature by doing the following:
Open Outlook 2013.
Go to the Ribbon and select File.
Select Options.
In the left pane, select Trust Center.
Click the Trust Center Settings button.
Select Automatic Download from the left pane.
Uncheck the Don’t download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items checkbox.
Click OK.
Click OK again to close the Outlook Options window.
