I'm starting to use MS Outlook 2010 for work and I would like email alerts only to show up every hour or so, instead of showing up right when the message is received. Is there a way to make Outlook do this?
After having gone through the Options menu and after some research in Google, I haven't found anything useful.
Any pointers would be appreciated!
It's a feature, not a bug.
Outlook shows the messages in the current folder, and if you check the option to "Show Messages from Other Folders", it will also show them in the conversation thread, but will only select by default the last from this folder.
This may be helpful: Under the View tab → Conversation Settings, set all options to "Always expand", and to indent. At least it's visible that there is a newer message you sent.
The other option as you commented is to create a Search folder to include all inbox and sent items and set it as the starting folder for outlook going to "file" - "Options" - "Advanced" and modifying Outlook start and Exit - see screenshots:
What you are stating is correct. Sent is when you send the message. Received is when the mail server receives the message. Modified is when the computer retrieves the message from the server. If the email client is on, then received and modified would be very close in time to each other. Modified should be after received even if it is milliseconds behind.

What version of outlook are you using? and do you want to only receive emails once an hour or just have it alert you every hour? because in later version of outlook you can make it to where it will only send and receive once every hour and then it will alert you about your emails.
