OpenVPN to access the company’s VPN

I want to access the VPN setup at my office place from my macbook. I tried accessing the VPN by creating a VPN interface in Network Preferences BU all in vain. I am now trying to connect to the VPN using VPN clients for Mac. I came across OpenVPN but I want to know if it can be used to access a private network like the one setup by my company or is it something like I have to create a server on OpenVPN and then access it on a client at home.

If you're using snow leopard I believe it is:

System Preferences>Network

Click on the + sign, select VPN and add your details.

The correct configuration for OpenVpn is:

route-nopull 
route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0

These entries belong in your .ovpn file and will direct all 192.168.0.* subnet traffic through the VPN.

For one IP only (192.168.0.1):

route-nopull 
route 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.255

BTW: route-nopull means "don't pull routes from the server"

OpenVPN does not work on Wireless

Your VPN server has this option push "redirect-gateway def1". This means the openvpn server is not pushing a 'default' gateway, which is generally understood to mean a route for the network range defined by 0.0.0.0/0.

Using that option means your VPN server will send two routes 0.0.0.0/1, and 128.0.0.0/1 (or 0.0.0.0/128.0.0.0 and 128.0.0.0/128.0.0.0 if you like the masks expanded). Since routes are processed from most specific to least specific, this means that these two routes should take precedence over any routes for 0.0.0.0/0.

You also have bypass-dhcp option to redirect-gateway set. This will add static routes for the DHCP server your client used.
