I have just received a Linksys WRT54GC router of a friend. Apparently it has stopped working.

All lights on it are flashing apart from the power and wireless light. I have read of similar issues online but not ones describing the same set of lights flashing.
I have tried connecting to the device over ethernet but failed. It's no longer accessible over wireless either.

I've also tried to run the linksys utility on the cd but it failed to detect the presence of the device (attempted over ethernet, firewall switched off).

I've tried pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and disconnection the power cable for 30 seconds but to no avail.

Sounds like you may have a bricked router. You could try again to hold the reset for longer than 30 seconds, and make sure your computer that you have attached via Ethernet to port 1 of the linksys is set to automatically obtain IP via DHCP.

If the multiple 30 - 60 second resets are not working to bring it back, there is an option of flashing but without some sort of connection to it I doubt that would work either.

Issues with windows networks can often times be fixed by resetting winsock.

Run the following form the command prompt

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

If that does not solve the issue, you can try a windows 8 refresh

If the issue continues, download the latest network adapter drivers from the manufactures website an install them.

If after all of that, the issue still occurs, contact Lenovo support, or take the laptop to a computer repair shop for further diagnosing.

Why does the router stop giving out IP addresses

Page 187 of the X3500 manual shows how to extend the range of the DHCP server. Generally speaking, you might want to extend the subnet of your DHCPs range. What does your configuration look like? How many clients do you actually have on your network?

Since the manual says that 192.168.1.1 is the default IP adress of the router, take the following example on how your network might be configured:

wider netmask.

This will net you 1022 total available IPs for DHCP. Furthermore, you might try to reduce the DHCP lease time. This will make your router reassign IPs faster.
