Macos – How to show .htaccess files in specific folder in the Finder

I need to see my .htaccess files for the websites i develop locally on my Mac OS X. I put all my sites in the Sites folder. Since it starts with a dot, Mac OS X treats them as system – therefore invisible – files.

I'm aware that you can tell Mac OS X to show invisible files in Finder, either via Terminal or the TinkerTool software. But this makes the Finder and desktop look cluttered.

Therefore i would like to have Finder only show .htaccess files when inside the Sites folder.

Is that possible?

I'm afraid this isn't possible. It is just all or nothing. Here are a few alternatives to make it a bit smoother:

The Apple Hidden Files Widget. Toggle the hidden files with one click, works for me. Widget
Use a third party app for finding hidden files. For example, Path Finder from Cacao Tech. It makes it possible to view hidden files without your finder being messed up with all those files.

You can use dsstore_dump.pl tool which can read a store file's records in human-readable format.

It's part of the Mac-Finder-DSStore project written in perl by Wim L which provides routines for reading and writing the .DS_Store files generated by the OS X. See also: dsstore_dump.pl at GitHub and at my fork.

Macos – Disable all the idiot-checking in Mac OS X

If you want to stick with Finder (rather than using some third-party file manager such as Path Finder), then I don't know if there's an easy way to get what you want in one click. But, to run Finder as root:

sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder

In Snow Leopard this does not (always?) open an initial Finder window. If that happens, then do not click the Finder icon in the Dock (which might take you to the non-root Finder), but use Command-Tab to go to Finder and hit Command-N. Note the "root" name in the sidebar next to the home folder.

Alternatively, Apple explains Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X.

To show hidden files:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
